One of the cosiest places is the sitting room located down below in the old cider store - decorated with old utensils for making the cider barrels and tools for harvesting the apples and making the cider, all of this accompanied by a cosy, wood-burning fireplace with wide armchairs for reading a book or enjoying the local, home-made spirit liquor.

Newly built but retaining the look of an old farmhouse, Maddiola is part of Nekazalturismoa, the rural house association that requires properties to hold a licence issued by the Basque Government following an inspection. It is pretty much a guarantee of quality and indeed, our temporary abode was a delightful resting place. The rooms are comfortable, the breakfasts of homemade yoghurt, honey and fruit salad are deliciously healthy and the mini-spa was a most welcome surprise. The casa rural (country cottages) Gaztelubidea is at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria (Cantabrian mountains), in Bermedo, a quiet village with lots of green spaces and regional parks, such as Parque de Izki (Izki regional park). The cottages have been recently restored and are beautifully decorated in rustic style with completely equipped kitchens and bathrooms. Nearby activities include visits to the vineyards and bodegas, golf, walking, hunting, climbing, fishing, visits to regional parks and ancient buildings, such as churches and hermitages. The Izki golf complex is only 5 minutes away and is open to the public all year round. The swimming pool in the photographs is the village swimming pool set in a lovely park with lawns, bars and terraces, is only two minutes from the house, across the lane. Open from June till September it is a lovely place to enjoy a picnic or a snack and a drink too. There are many excellent bars and restaurants in the area, and visits to the towns of the Rioja Alavesa only 15 mins away are a must for anyone interested in wine, wine tasting and discovering the ancient culture of the area. Centrally situated for days out to many cities in Northern Spain, less than an hour from Vitoria, Logróño, Pamplona, Bilbao etc. About 45 mins to the lovely beaches and fishing towns of the Costa Vasca. Direct flights to Vitoria by Ryanair from London and Dublin, and many flights to Bilbao.

This is a newly built rural apartment. It is located in the village of San Felices, close to the capital city of Soria in a tranquil setting that is great for walking. There are groves of oaks mixed in with rosemary, lavander and thyme. It is close to the Moncayo national park. Get to know romanic architecture and the country that inspired the great poet, Antonio Machado. The Alhama river runs through oak groves and speaks to us of a past of the rugged wheat fields of Castille.

Iberetxebarria is a traditional 19th-century Basque country house, fully restored in 1980. It has 7 large, sunny double rooms. Lounge/dining room with hearth and reading room with TV. Fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher and washing mahine. 4 bathrooms and central heating. Located in the region of Uribe-Butrón, in the municipality of Gatika. It has an extensive 4-hectare estate, with a stream running through the middle. The estate is surrounded by small woods with local oak trees, hidden away in a small valley, away from the noise of the traffic, whilst offering privacy from onlookers. Laukiz is the closest town, and has several quality restaurants where you can enjoy excellent Basque cuisine. It also has a manege and a wall to play pelota and traditional stonethrowing. The region of Uribe-Butrón has the famous castle of Butrón. This is a must-see Romanticist structure. Next to Uribe-Butrón is the region of Uribe-Kosta with its beaches, here we can practice windsurf and paragliding, plus some fine routes to visit by bike or on foot. Not forgetting our proximity to Bilbao with the Guggenheim museum, the port and it's fine shopping and restaurants.
